The Landscape of Ideas. Patrick Nuttgens

“The Landscape of Ideas” von Patick Nuttgens ist ein Buch über den “Sinn” der wichtigsten Architektur-Stile.

Landscape of Ideas

„Essentially there were two contrasts – the contrast of enclosure and open space, and the contrast of natural and manmade. We can now go on to see how they can be seized upon and exploited to make a deliberately sacred landscape. It can be created by the manipulation of such inevitable contrasts (…). One such was very deliberate: the contrast of light and dark. (…) The environment created by the Greeks of the Hellenic period can be said to express an idea; (…) because, they developed an eye for combinations of landscape features as expressive of particular holiness. They went further. They placed in that landscape temples and subsidiary buildings so as to complement, or sometimes contradict, the “meaning that was felt in the land”.”

„Here then is a world which is man-made, dominated by technology and made possible by power. It is characterized by movement and flow, by the need for technical information and a know-how recognized by society, by conformity to the patterns that that society demands. The person dependent upon or subject to all these forces is urban or technopolitan man, herded into privacy and isolation, hopelessly dwarfed by the huge scale that technology requires. He is the man in the clover leaf (Kleeblatt-Autobahn-Kreuz) and he contrasts with the man in the fig leaf, the man living in nature and simplicity with God around the corner.”
